Dragon Naturally Speaking is one of the most popular and highly acclaimed speech recognition applications available. Available in several different versions, the Preferred edition is designed for consumer, small business, and education use, allowing almost anyone to record their thoughts, speed up note-taking, and streamline their work efficiency.
Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 claims a 20% improvement in speech recognition accuracy from the previous version, and it's a claim that's backed up with real results. Speech is recorded and dictated very clearly, with minimal dictation errors under regular use. However, we found that short sentences are dictated incorrectly more frequently than lengthy ones.
Preventing errors is largely down to intuitive use and microphone quality. With a high quality microphone (and sound card) users will experience higher transcription quality and accuracy.
Allowing users to edit more than just documents, Naturally Speaking Preferred is ideal for filling in forms, inputting data into spreadsheets, and even filling in addresses and text boxes in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. Users can even navigate program menus and Windows status bars.
For ultra-busy professionals, Naturally Speaking Preferred allows users to record audio into an external recorded for later dictation. This feature is perfect for busy users that are often on the go, but still need notes and documents dictated.
However, Dragon Naturally Speaking Preferred isn't without its share of potential problems. While most installations go smoothly, many users found problems with DVD installation and software configuration.
Dragon Naturally Speaking Preferred: What We Liked
Remote recording and later dictation is great for busy executives, students, and home users.
Version 10 has a range of upgrades on its predecessors, the most noticeable being highly improved dictation accuracy.
Support for web browsers, spreadsheet applications, and even Windows interfaces means that users can speed up their PC operation in almost any application.
Dragon Naturally Speaking Preferred: What We Didn't Like
Some users have reported installation issues, almost most installations go smoothly.
Low quality audio equipment can cause dictation accuracy issues.
